The Department of Integrated Sciences in Physics and Biology studies new fields that integrate physics, life sciences and energy.
The Department of Integrated Sciences in Physics and Biology is the only department in the university where students study subjects related to life sciences, physics and computers simultaneously and are exposed to new world-class cutting-edge research fields such as nano-bio, bioinformatics and development of environment-friendly energy systems. Virtually no other university has a department where students can study and research such interdisciplinary domains. In recent years, the department has attracted the attention of industries related to pharmaceuticals, foods, energy, information and materials.

1.Education and Research

Through broad education in the natural science fields of physics, chemistry and biology, the Department of Integrated Sciences in Physics and Biology fosters scientists who can contribute to the development of new science and technology, integrating life sciences, energy science and material science which are central to modern science and technology, and the growth of industry, and trains science teachers who will contribute to educating the next generation.

The Department of Integrated Sciences in Physics and Biology fosters the ability to respond to life sciences, energy science and material science and integrated fields, by enhancing basic life science education and giving students a broad-based grounding in science in general.
In the first year, students study the basics of physics, biology, chemistry and mathematics. In the second year, following on from the first year, they acquire basic knowledge and calculation skills in natural sciences. In the third year, students develop technical skills and thinking powers, by studying specialized fields in life sciences, energy science and material science and the basics of integrated fields. In the fourth year, students develop professional capabilities to respond to the development of cutting-edge science and technology, by joining a laboratory under a professor and studying and researching a specialized field.

2.Admission Policy

Under the admission policy of the College of Humanities and Sciences, the Department of Integrated Sciences in Physics and Biology admits students who aspire to acquire knowledge and academic capability in boundary and integrated domains capable of responding to the development of today’s cutting-edge science and technology and life sciences, and to contribute to the future development of science and technology and the growth of industry.
