Department of English Language and Literature
In the Department of English Language and Literature our aim is to guide students towards an understanding of the essence of English language and British and American culture through the study of British and American literature and English linguistics.
The department takes pride in its 80-year history, and in order to nurture the development of truly internationally-minded students, we implement our education divided into three areas of study. The first is training to strengthen the student’s basic language ability. The second is to deepen students’ awareness of the English language through attaining a better understanding of its structure and functions. The third is for students to gain a deeper understanding of both British and American culture and thought through reading a wide variety of British and American literature such as poetry, plays, novels and essays. Our highly experienced educators strive to open the door to a whole new world for students by providing a multihued learning experience.

1.Education and Research

Our aim is to train students so that they are equipped to succeed, firstly within the global community and in many diverse fields, by providing a rich education in which a high level command of English and a deep knowledge of British and American literature and English linguistics can be achieved. In concrete terms, through study in the communication subjects, students will gain a command of English to a level that enables them to communicate effectively in the global society. In addition to this, through study of the specialist subjects, students will develop a specialist awareness and more flexible concept of values through the study of English language, culture, literature and thought, and thus, we aim to nurture students who are rich in individuality.

Educational principles

We aim to train personnel who can succeed on the world stage, and to do so we must impart in them a solid command of English as a foundation along with high level communication skills and also imbue them with human qualities that reflect a wide knowledge in order that they be well educated and display a keen sense that enables them to respond flexibly with changing times and situations.

We believe that through study of the English language, literature, culture and thought, using the study of English as a common denominator, our students may gain a deeper insight into human existence, and a more flexible view and awareness of other cultures that potentially leads them to an awakening about their own Japanese identity.

Educational goals

As a first goal we work to consolidate student’s basic English language ability across the four skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking, in order that students reach the goal of being capable of expressing their thoughts and to effectively communicate them in English.

Our second goal is for students to gain a deeper awareness of English as a ‘language’ through attainment of a thorough understanding of the construction and functions of the language.

The third is for students to gain a deeper understanding of both British and American culture and thought through reading a wide variety of British and American literature such as poetry, plays, novels and essays.

2.Admissions Policy

Based on the admission policy of the College of Humanities and Sciences, the Department of English Language and Literature admits students who aim to be an achiever in a variety of fields both in Japan and abroad, and who through study and research will strive to gain a strong command of English. In addition our students will be cultured people who will go on to display a deep knowledge of Anglo-American literature and English linguistics and also be equipped with flexible understanding and awareness of a diverse variety of values.
